What is Ancient Tree (Gushu) tea and why does it cost more than ordinary tea?

Gushu tea is picked from tea trees, often over a century old, that grow wild in forest ecosystems in Lincang and Pu'er rather than on cultivated plantations. Their deep root systems and slow growth at 1,600-2,600m elevation concentrate flavour compounds that large-leaf plantation tea cannot replicate, which is why Gushu tea commands a premium in the wholesale market.
